On this page, we'll have ideas, tips, photos and resources pertaining to interior (non-decorating) issues such as: flooring, walls, kitchens, bathrooms, ceilings, wiring, basement waterproofing, rodent removal and attics.
From our experiences:
FLOORING: several years ago, we replaced the first floor flooring with a "laminate" with a nice wood finish. Overall, we like the results very much. The biggest downside that we've discovered is that foot tracks are more difficult to clean than with traditional wood floors. We use a special cleaner to remove these tracks, but it can get a little high-maintenance depending on how much of a perfectionist you are!
We just finished renovating our second floor, and this time, we chose natural red oak flooring.
If you're looking for a flooring contractor, we can connect you with the one we used in Vernon, CT.
WALLS: the outer inner walls of our log home are curved logs, but the interior room-by-room walls are traditional sheetrock. We have found that painting these sheetrock walls a mix of colors adds spice to the log home--especially when we go into the bleak winter months when the outdoor landscape is mostly black, gray and white. If you need someone to help you to select the right colors for your log home, we have a friend who has owned an interior design/window treatment firm in Vernon for many years. Just call or email us for contact information.
KITCHEN: Several years ago, we had our kitchen cabinets refaced and added accent lighting above and beneath the cabinets. We were satisfied with the results. If you would like contact information for our contractor in the Springfield, MA area, just let us know.
BASEMENT WATERPROOFING: Since our log home is on the top of a hill with a rock ledge, several years ago, we hired a reputable contractor to install a sump pump, indoor trench, dehumidification system. I had met the owner of this firm in Shelton through the Better Business Bureau, and we have been quite happy with the results--a nice, dry basement year-round! No more musty smell, which does a number on allergies! If you would like contact information, please email or call us.
RODENT REMOVAL: Living in the country, you will likely have some rodent issues. For mice, we use a have-a-heart trap using a blend of peanut butter and Kashi cereal (works every time!). One year, we had a "herd" of flying squirrels living in our attic. We hired a 'live-trap" wildlife expert in Tolland, CT to catch them, and to tighten up the spots where they were gaining access to our attic. If you would like contact information, please email or call us.
